iWeb files

July 27, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hi all,

Here’s how to take your iWeb files from one computer to another (and then edit them in iWeb) >

On the computer you’ve been working on in the lab at school, your iWeb file (called ‘Domain’) is in the following location:

• Macintosh HD > Users > You > Library > Application Support > iWeb > Your file (Domain)

Copy this Domain file to your flash drive, and then drop it in the same folder on your personal computer. With this Domain file on your computer, you should be able to open up iWeb and edit your work as you have been doing on the computer in the lab.

Cheers,

Phil

Phil’s Class – Project 4

July 2, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hi all!

One thing I would like to re-iterate from this morning (Thursday). If you are using photography, please make sure you set up a consistent scene – ie, lighting, background, composition. We don’t want shadows or positioning acting inconsistently once you’ve exported to QuickTime!

Have a good 4th July weekend team.

June 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hi guys,

For the crit tomorrow (just to make absolutely clear), have your illustrator file on a jump drive ready to hand me in the morning, as we’ll show that on the projector. We will pass around your cube as you’re explaining your concept.

Any other questions, email me.

Mid-term

June 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hi all,

For the mid-term (as you know by now) you will be asked to prepare for a number of possible scenarios, and then given one of these as the test (which is on Wednesday, by the way). The mid term project may include using both Illustrator and Photoshop, or just one application. It may require you to gather images, sketch compositions before hand, and revisit the tutorials Santanu and I have been constantly directing you all toward since the first day of class. Possible mid-term projects are:

i.) Personal identity/self promotional poster – Photoshop and Illustrator

How do you visually represent YOU? Interests, thoughts, principles, morals, philosophies?  Which images would you use? Representational or non-objective? Both Photoshop and Illustrator must be used for this project – Selection tools, adjustment layers, smart objects, live trace, typography (which font, create outlines) etc etc. Gather your images, and have a clear sketched thumbnail of your concept, ready to digitize. You need to write a small description about your concept.

Create a folder with your name and save every image used in the design. Your final design should be titled as “MID-TERM PROJECT”

Format: You may determine the layout dimensions. Photoshop file (including layers) and Illustrator file – no pdf’s

ii.) Letterform abstraction – Illustrator

Pick a single letterform (for example, ‘A’ set in Helvetica), of a specifically chosen font, and create 50 separate compositions within the dimensions of a 5×5″ square plain. All within the same document in Illustrator, you can use the layers palette in order to create your square and then ’switch’ each graphic on or off using the ‘eye-con’. 50 thumbnails pushes you to display something as generic as a character of the alphabet in a number of different ways. The design process of working, working and re-working is key here.

iii.) Manipulate/edit a photograph in order to change the visual meaning/emotion etc – Illustrator and/or Photoshop

This exam is about design process, concept and skill. You need to write a small description about yourself (for your instructor to understand what part of yourself has been portrayed by you?). What is the concept should come out of your design. Skill in this situation is not only esthetically pleasing it also includes attention to details.

You will be provided with digital images by your instructor ( book / packaging / 3D object), which will be used for the base, platform or structure for the design. You can also use additional images taken by you to work on the design. You may create a logo + phone number + e-mail + website as a contact.

Create a folder with your name and save every image used in the design. Your final design should be titled as “MID-TERM PROJECT”

Format: Photoshop file (including layers) And Illustrator file no pdf’s

Project 3

Here is an example (very basic) of project 3. I have used screenshots and saved them as PDFs so you can see them within Illustrator!

Hope this helps!

What you need to hand in on Tuesday – Phil’s class

June 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hi again!

For tomorrows critique, you will need the following:

i.) Your image saved as a TIFF file format

ii.) Your image saved as a JPEG format

iii.) Your image printed and mounted (see post below)

NB – have your files ready on a jump drive when you come to class…no copying files at the start of the crit! If that’s the case, it’ll be a late mark I’m afraid.

Cheers,

Mounting

June 22, 2009 · 2 Comments

Hi guys,

Phil’s class – as I stated in class on Thursday, mounting should be on either Illustration/Matte board or foam board (both purchasable from the Bookstore or Co-op). 1″ border please. In terms of adhesives to use, I recommend Spray Mount – as long as you spray BOTH surfaces! Otherwise your print won’t stay mounted for long! If you decide to use Rubber Cement, just don’t be too hasty in applying it to the surface – we don’t want any blobs and bubbles.

Saturday

June 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hi all,

I will come and open the lab at noon on Saturday, if there are still those interested in working here over the weekend. I’m not planning on staying on campus though. If you would like to come earlier than noon, I suggest you email me to let me know what time you’re planning on coming.

Have a good weekend.

Project 1 Recap

June 18, 2009 · 1 Comment

After a fast and frenzied first week of class, here are a few examples of student work from the 3 exercises included in the first project. Based upon traditional design skills and knowledge, students created compositions using only geometric forms on the computer, each composition representing a verb or adjective.

Exercise 1 – Dot/Circle

Phil’s Class Project 2

June 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hi all,

We’ll finish up the crit tomorrow, and we’ve seen some great stuff thus far!

As for the next project – be sure to read over the outline. You’ll notice the ‘themes’ (of which there are 4) are listed: LSU Campus, Shaw Center, Spanish Town, Perkins Rowe. Each row will be assigned a theme, and this will be the basis of the project. So, row 1 (nearest the projector screen) gets LSU Campus, row 2 the Shaw Center, row 3 Spanish Town and last but not least row 4 gets Perkins Rowe. These are the environments/places that you’ll be taking pictures from, and creating a seamless composition of. This is an individual project, and it will be interesting to see variations and visual interpretations of the same places.

The aim of the project is to visually represent the tone, mood, look and feel, attitude of your given theme/environment. People in row 1 – how does the LSU campus speak to you? What about Perkins Rowe, row 4??

If you want to start going to your locations and taking pics, I encourage it. But this, along with the outline in the syllabus, should get your creative wheels turning!

See you in the morning for the remainder of the crit, project 2 Q&A, and a Photoshop tutorial!
